Imperium
- Machinehead
by Andy Webber
This monstrous
riff from Machinehead uses a headbanging rhythm
played on the lower strings, interspaced with
natural harmonics on the higher strings. This
riff is suprisingly tricky to master due to the
awkward stretch to play the harmonic on the fifth
fret.
Begin by
playing the riff without the harmonics, to get
to grips with the rhythm. This alone is tricky
enough to pick up. When you are confident with
this, practise adding in the harmonics. Do this
very slowly at first to make sure you are hitting
the harmonic every time. Use you little finger
to stretch up to it.
The hardest
part is fretting the harmonic correctly everytime,
as it is easy to press too hard, or miss the string
altogether! The best way to practise, is to play
it through twice slowly, and once fast. Then repeat
until you can play the whole thing up to speed.
