| Eric
Clapton: Tears In Heaven
with Andy Webber
This
is one of the most beautiful songs written by the
legend Eric Clapton. It uses a strict fingerpicking
technique (see Finger
Picking lesson). If you look at the tab you
will notice a distinct pattern.
Get
the Tab
Throughout
the song you will see that you need to pluck two
notes on the G and B strings simultaneously, and
one note on the low E string. Use your thumb to
pluck the bass notes and use your first and second
finger to pluck the higher notes on the G and B
strings.
Watch
out for the parts where the bass note is played
at the same time as the higher notes as well as
in between them. You should notice that you get
into a rhythm quite quickly.
One
of the trickier parts of this song is the fast trill
in the opening passage (bar 2). This takes a lot
of practise to perfect. Take it slowly at first
and then speed it up.
In
parts of the song (e.g. end of bar 2) you need to
use a barring technique. This is where you place
your index finger across all the strings. This technique
can be painful at first, but it gets easier with
practise. (Lesson on barre chords coming soon!)

Webber.
