This is a
classic song that no guitarist should be unable
to play.
Warning:
Don't play this in guitar shops as they get very
upset!
Apart from
annoying guitar shop assistants, this is a great
song to learn on the guitar. It uses a fingerpicking
technique (see Finger
Picking lesson) and is based mostly around
barre chord shapes (Lesson coming soon).
There are
two ways to play this song. One way is to learn
the tab and only fret the notes that are going
to be played, and the other way is to fret the
whole chord or most of the chord and only pick
the notes that are going to be played. I personally
prefer the second method as you will see in the
video, because it reminds me what chords actually
make up the song and I find it easier to remember.
There is no correct way, it's down to personal
choice.
Get
The tab
Fingerpicking
means that you don't use a plectrum but you use
your fingers on your picking hand to pluck each
note. This style of playing allows more than one
note to be picked at the same time.
Like
everything we learn at the Cosmic Guitar Academy,
start off really slowly and get everything perfect
before speeding things up. This is a slow song
anyway, so start off ultra-slow!
I'll
leave you to work out what the chords are in this
song. You shouldn't have any trouble now you have
come this far.
Watch
out for the grace note in the second half. This
is the note that you hammer on with your first
finger. It is called a grace note because it does
not come on the beat, but just before it (or after
depending on how you look at it!).
