Funk Guitar : Lesson 2
with Andy Webber

Here is another funk lick for you to learn. It is based around the minor seventh chord. It starts off with Gm7. If you do not know this chord, you simply need to bar your fist finger across the whole guitar neck at the 3rd fret, and then add on a D note at the 5th fret on the A string. Check out the video:

I'll leave it to you to work out the rhythm using the same method you learnt in the last lesson. If you have not already done so, take a look at Funk Guitar : Lesson 1.

You need to add in an E and and an F on the B string as shown in the video. Repeat this 3 times and then change chords to Cm7 and then Dm7. These start on the A string so the fingering is slightly different to that used for Gm7. Bar your first finger across the 3rd fret, but do not include the low E string. Add in the 4th fret on the B string and the 5th fret on the D string. This is Cm7. Shift the pattern up 2 frets to form Dm7.

The most important part of this lick is being able to apply the right ammount of pressure to the fretboard with your left hand. You need to be constantly lifting your fingers away form the fretboard when you are not playing a note and then pressing down again when you are.

Remember to keep your right hand moving at all times.

Play around with this idea. Try different variations on rhythms and chords to produce ideas of your own.

Andy Webber.
