Pro 5 - Review
Guitar
Pro 5 is the leading guitar tablature editing software,
and is one of the most useful tools a guitarist
can have to aid their learning.
What
does it do?
Guitar
Pro 5 allows you to load a guitar tab, which it
will then play through while displaying the tab
and music notation on the screen.
Guitarists
use it for different things. Some simply use it
to listen to tabs being played out loud, and learn
new songs quickly and easily. Others use it to write
and edit their own tablature, while other guitarists
use it for the vast number of guitar tools available.
Why
is it so good?
Everyone
who has used Guitar Pro 5 will tell you the best
thing about it is how easy it is to use. It is the
most versatile program out there and has something
for every guitarist.
It has
numerous features such as the ability to slow down
any piece of music so that you can study it note
for note, allowing you to learn any song, no matter
how fast!
It can
be used to write your own music, which is great
if you are in a band as you can also write the parts
for all the other instruments such as drums, bass
and keyboards. Imagine being able to write a whole
song and then send it to your band mates so that
they can listen to it straight away and look at
the music at the same time!

"Guitar
Pro's strength is in its ease of use - It really
couldn't be simpler."
The
lastest version boasts a whole range of upgrades
including a Realistic Sound Engine (RSE) which makes
the instruments sound suprisingly real! The MIDI
sound output has been modelled on recorded instruments,
and although not perfect, it is much better than
the "organ" sound that other software
produces.
The
list of tools that the package comes with is endless!
There is a digital guitar tuner, metronome, chord
finder, scale finder, virtual fretboard / keyboard...
The
program also allows you to write down any technique
that you can play on the guitar such as bending,
sliding, hammer-ons and vibrato to name a few. You
will find that you can write music much more easily
than you would normally because you can actually
hear the notes as you write them down. You don't
have to look at your guitar, work out the note,
and then write it down, you just click on the virtual
fretboard at the top of the screen.
Guitar
Pro does have a few weaknesses, such as when you
bend a note it doesn't always hit the correct pitch,
but the benefits outweigh this tenfold.
The
only competion Guitar Pro has is Power Tabs, a similar
guitar tablature editing software, but Power Tabs
are harder to find on the net than Guitar Pro Tabs,
so mos people prefer the Guitar Pro software.
When
I first tried Guitar Pro 5 I was amazed at how quickly
I could pick up songs. Being able to loop certain
sections, slow them down and hear them at the same
time as watching the moving cursor scroll over the
tab is by far the fastest way to learn the guitar.
I was also amazed at the number of Guitar Pro tabs
there are out there! A quick search on Google will
direct you to any tab you want to learn!
Pro’s: The
list is almost endless… Easy to use, does
everything you want plus more!
Con’s:
The RSE still has room for improvement, but is still
better than any other software.
Summary:
Guitar Pro 5 is an extremely versatile, powerful
and easy to use bit of kit that no guitarist should
be without.
