Shred
Guitar 1
by Andy Webber
In
this lesson I am going to show you shredding lick.
This lick uses fast alternate picking, and has
a tricky string skipping part. Watch the video
to see it:
Here
I start off really slowly and build up the speed.
That's exactly what I want you to do! This riff
takes ages to learn because it is hard to remember
where all the notes are.

Start
off by going through the riff really slowly using
strict alternate picking. That means Up-Down-Up-Down...
all the time without changing. The trikiest bit
comes in bar 8 where you have to skip strings.Do
everything the same but be really careful not
to hit the B string in between.
Keep
going over and over really slowly until you have
thoroughly learnt the whole riff. Don't be surprised
if it takes you at least a week to be able to
do this even slowly! Once you have done this you
can start to build up the speed.
The
best way to do this is using a metronome (available
in our shop). Start off
on a tempo that you can comfortably play the whole
thing through without a single mistake. Don't
worry if this seems ridiculously slow! The slower
the beter at this stage. Then increase the tempo
by 10 bpm and play again. If you can't play it
though perfectly then try again. If you still
can't do it perfectly after three attempts, go
back 10bpm. Be really strict with yourself here
- it will pay off in the end! Keep doing this
every time you practise and eventually you will
build up a high speed.
Don't
let your hands tense up or you will lose speed.
Just relax!
Another
similar example coming soon!
